It's truly sad when you see something so pure as the One Laptop Per Child concept go so quickly down the drain.

Family Welcome

TuxThis is the newest technical user group in Waco, and though the name says Linux User Group, users of all Open Source operating systems are welcome, from Linux to FreeBSD to even Solaris... Heck, even if you are a FreeDOS user, welcome aboard :)

The purpose of HOTLUG is to bring the Open Source philosophy to the Waco community, and to give those interested in the Open Source model place to learn and teach about FOSS (Free and Open Source Software).  Our goal is also to advocate the fact that you do have a choice, and through Open Source software, you can truly take control of your computer.

Our meetings are free and open to anyone, as is our website.  If you're interested in getting involved, jump into our Message Forum or IRC channel and say Hey.   Also know, there are no 'dumb' questions, and you won't get an RTFM or *plonk*.  We're all here to have fun, learn from each other, and experience what the world of Open Source software has to offer.

So with that, I'll welcome you to HOTLUG, and simply say... have fun.

July 2007 Meeting
Written by Sam Alexander
Wednesday, 13 June 2007

We had TONS of new faces at the June meeting last night, and my apologies for not having a sign-in sheet.  Also I want to say thanks to Walton and everyone who attended from his classes for coming as well.  Revolution OS is one of the best works documenting the story and history of the Open Source and Free Software movements, and though some of the material in the movie is now outdated (movie was released in 2001), the history and persons interviewed in the movie are still hard at work to help the movement evolve in today's technical market.

Our July Meeting date has yet to be set, but thus far the agenda is Hank Ivy doing a demonstration on The Gimp, which is an open source image editor, plus  Walton Yantis has offered to give some info and background in regards to the Grid project he and his classes are working on at TSTC.  Here's the TSTC website for this project - http://watxgrid.tstc.edu/ .

So once again, thanks to everyone who attended, and if you have any comments or suggestions for upcoming meetings, please voice your thoughts on the Message Forum .  Due to spammers I've had to enable some security which requires us to approve everyone before they can post, but we try to do it fairly quickly (within a day or less in most casts).  I've created a thread for the July Meeting plus I've created a thread to discuss your thoughts on an installfest

The date for our July 2007 meeting will be posted soon, and thanks again to everyone who attended last night.  We hope the movie was  worth coming out for.

HOTLUG on LUGWW
A week or two ago I submitted HOTLUG to the LUGWW website, and we've been accepted.  We're now listed there in addition to being listed on linux.org.  If anyone else knows of another LUG listing, please submit our group or let me (Sam) know so I can submit it.  The more we get the word out, the easier it'll be for local folks to find us.

HOTLUG Turns One This Week!

It was one year ago this week (Dec 21st exactly) that HOTLUG.ORG was kicked back off.  Though this wasn't the first attempt at a Waco-based LUG, no one can deny that it has evolved into the largest and most active LUG in the area.

Thanks goes out to everyone who's made this LUG grow and evolve into the group it is today.
